Sheriff Jim Karnes Dies at 71

JAMES ‘Big Jim’ KARNES | 1940-2011

Sheriff Jim Karnes

Franklin County Sheriff's Office

Columbus, Ohio

The sheriff of the central Ohio county that includes Columbus has died after a recent diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.  Karnes was the county's 50th and longest-serving sheriff.

His wife Sandy Karnes said that while her husband was known for law and order, his commitment to the community went beyond just locking up bad guys.

Jim Karnes gave time to many organizations, among them, the D.A.R.E. program.

"He never missed a D.A.R.E. graduation," his wife Sandy said,  "If it was possible until he was sick, he went to every D.A.R.E. graduation and shook hands with every kid.  That was a very important part of his life."

As a huge advocate of the D.A.R.E. program, Sheriff Karnes was on the

D.A.R.E. Executive Law Enforcement Advisory Board.

Sheriff Jim Karnes Franklin County's longest serving sheriff will be remembered for his dedication and giving nature.
