D.A.R.E. America Launches New High School Curriculum
During 2016, D.A.R.E. America launched a new suite of curricula for high school students. The program consists of three distinct modules – REAL Messages, myPlaybook/myPlaybook Student Athlete, and Celebrating Safely – that offer educators and law enforcement flexible and cost-effective options for providing students with relevant and timely information and tools to exercise responsible decisionmaking. The curricular components are independent, but supportive of one another. The modules can be implemented individually as companion pieces, or as a complete suite.
myPlaybook, in particular, is an evidence-based program shown to reduce alcohol and drug use among high school students. Specifically, students who completed the myPlaybook High School curriculum experienced:
- Greater improvements in skills to resist drug offers;
- More accurate perceptions that friends view drug use as unacceptable;
- Decreased intentions to use alcohol and cigarettes in the next 30 days; and
- Reductions in prior month’s alcohol use
Additionally, Rutgers University and REAL Prevention have conducted two studies that show REAL messages changes attitudes towards drugs and intentions to use.
