2022 D.A.R.E. Keynote Speaker

Dr. Stephan Sroka

Keynote Description

You have the Power of One to Make a Difference, but you need the Power of Many to keep making that difference!

Trusted relationships may be the most important variable for effective learning, leading and living for DARE educators. The traditional challenges of building relationships are based on the 4 C’s: Communication, Collaboration, Cultural Competency and Caring. Today, COVID presents ongoing challenges.
This motivational keynote is filled with “tips from the trenches” to help keep you and your students, staff and community safe and healthy so they can learn more and live better. It is packed with cutting-edge information, practical strategies and heartfelt stories about leadership, the whole child, mental health, kindness, the power of words, the trauma-informed brain (adverse childhood experiences), social emotional learning, stress management, wellness, and school and community climate and safety.
Dr. Stephen Sroka has spoken worldwide with The Power of One message, how one person can make a difference. Steve died while presenting a school in-service. A principal, two SRO’s and others saved his life and changed his message. He now talks about how you need The Power of Many, how it takes a team, to make a lasting difference.
Research-based and reality-driven, this session offers honesty, humor, and hope. It stresses the importance of Resiliency and the 4 P’s: Purpose, Passion, Pride and Persistence. It will warm your heart, stir your soul and ignite your brain. It has been said that it can even change your life professionally and personally. Let’s see if it can spark the fire and the WHY within you.
Dr Steve Sroka

Bio (English)

“Boy is retarded,” reads the top of Dr. Stephen Sroka’s third-grade report card. He was raised in the “projects” by a single mother on welfare. In ES, he was mocked for having a crossed eye and a speech impediment. He was crippled in a HS fight. Doctors said, “ Listen to your teachers.” The more he listened, the smarter the teachers became. His HS counselor told him that he didn’t have the IQ to go to college, but he didn’t know that Steve had the I WILL. He learned to live with the gifts of ADHD and dyslexia. His struggles to become a teacher made him a better educator.

He went from the “projects” to being inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame. He was awarded The Walt Disney American Outstanding Teacher of Health and received the Outstanding School Health Educator Award and Fellow status from the American School Health Association. Recently, he was named the Person of the Year for The International Association for Truancy and Dropout Prevention and received the first-ever School Health Leader Award from the American Public Health Association. He has been a guest on Oprah and covered in USA TODAY, and recently in Education Week, New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and Austin American-Stateman.  But his favorite “award” was when his then 6 year old daughter told him he was smarter than Inspector Gadget.

He has worked in schools for over 30 years helping DARE keep kids safe and healthy. He has keynoted many DARE conferences. Today, he is an international speaker, author, consultant, Adjunct Assistant Professor, School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University, and president of his company, Health Education Consultants.

He travels the world striving to reach, elevate and inspire with The Power of One message. After a cardiac arrest, he realized that The Power of One was not enough. He needed The Power of Many. We all do. He now believes that one person can make a lasting difference with the power of many, and that is his WHY.

Aubree Adams

Aubree Adams is a proud mom of 2 sons and 2 dogs and is a former Pueblo Colorado resident. She has a BS in Exercise Science and Health Promotion and has worked as a physical therapist assistant for almost 20 years. Aubree was awarded the 2021 Moxie Award from The Drug Free America Foundation and her op-ed was published in USA Today.

After experiencing the devastating consequence of marijuana legalization she started volunteering and warning other communities which opened the door for her to serve as Director of Every Brain Matters, a project of Parents Opposed to Pot (non-profit). She is also an administrator for Moms Strong and is the Director of a group called Citizens for a Safe and Healthy Texas, which unites and educates communities on the impacts of marijuana.

Aubree presents a unique firsthand perspective of this public health crisis that she expressed in the documentary, Chronic State. She has publicly debated the marijuana proponents in Texas in hopes they choose to embrace their children, not the drug culture expansion.

In 2018, Aubree decided to leave Colorado due to the harms legal marijuana caused her family and community and join her son in a dynamic enthusiastic recovery community in Houston Texas, where she has volunteered as the parent coordinator. She embraces the opportunity to host teens and young adults who are in recovery in her home.  She sponsors, supports, and encourages other parents to work their own recovery programs and currently leads an online recovery group through the Every Brain Matters community.
