Area 5th grade students complete the D.A.R.E. program

LA CROSSE, Wisc. (WKBT) – In honor of National D.A.R.E. day on Thursday, April 18, the La Crosse Police department honored students at Northside Elementary on Wednesday with a D.A.R.E. graduation.

84 5th grade students from Coulee Montesori and Northside have completed the D.A.R.E. life skills program that is implemented in area schools.

D.A.R.E. curriculum includes teaching kids decision-making skills, how to handle peer pressure, the dangers of drugs, and how to ask for help when needed.

La Crosse Speacial Operations Officer Kurt Weaver says, “Once you put that D.A.R.E. shirt on you become a role model. The little kids in class will look up to you, because you’ve got that D.A.R.E. shirt on… I hope that’s what they take forward, is that they want to make choices and decisions that people will look up to and the things that they do.”

Due to an increase in peer pressure and negative behavior in area schools, Officer Weaver says the demand for the D.A.R.E. program has significantly increased over the last couple of years.
