On October 16, 2018, The Calverton School held its Fifth Grade D.A.R.E. Graduation in the Bowen-Thomas Theater. The D.A.R.E. Graduating Class of 2018 presented eighteen graduates. This is DFC Clas’ 9th year of teaching D.A.R.E.

Opening remarks were given by the Head of the School, Christopher Hayes, D.A.R.E. Instructor DFC Andrew Clas and the Calvert County Sheriff Mike Evans. Also attending the graduation were Calvert County Commissioner Pat Nutter and Assistant State’s Attorney Andrew Rappaport.

There were three D.A.R.E. Essay Award winners and each read their winning essay on what they learned in the class. The whole curriculum is done in two weeks. So the students have a lot to learn in a short amount of time. The winning essays were:

1st Prize – Aurora Casey

2nd Prize – Gigi Cockrell

3rd Prize – Trevor Caison

Each of the winners were presented with a Daren the Lion doll.

The presentation of D.A.R.E. Certificates were presented by DFC Andrew Clas, Sheriff Mike Evans, Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Andrew Rappaport. The graduates were:

Matteo Brewer, Trevor Caison, George Case, Aurora Casey, Gig Cockrell, Clarke Flowers, Luke Hawit, Katie Mathers, Thomas McCourt, Matthew Miller, Cole Pastuzyn, Connor Polk, Charlie Raines, Steffi Shoup, Christopher Shove, David Turner, Caden van Dalen and Asa Weimer. Each was presented a certificate and a goody bag and got to have a picture taken with Daren the D.A.R.E. Lion!

During the two weeks of D.A.R.E. instruction, many pictures were taken and were incorporated into a slide show for all the attendees to see. The audience was heard to chuckle on more than one picture.

Closing out the 2018 D.A.R.E. Graduation, Heidi Merryman, Head of Lower School, gave the final remarks. All were invited to the Lower School Library for refreshments.
