D.A.R.E., renowned for its dedication to preventing substance abuse and building strong relationships between law enforcement officers and students, is set to make a positive impact on the lives of Emerson Elementary students. The program started Monday, Aug. 21, 2023 and will run for 10 weeks. Fifth-grade students will meet daily for 45 minutes.
Through a series of engaging and interactive sessions, certified D.A.R.E. officers will provide students with essential life skills to resist the pressures of drug and alcohol abuse, while also addressing topics such as bullying, peer pressure, and decision-making.
“The program is designed to empower students with the knowledge and confidence to make healthy choices that contribute to their personal well-being and academic success,” said Officer Weldon, who will run the program at Emerson and is specifically trained in D.A.R.E. education.
Principal Meredith Johnson expressed excitement about the upcoming launch.
“We are thrilled to partner with the Kearney Police Department to bring the D.A.R.E. Program to Emerson Elementary,” Johnson said. “This initiative aligns perfectly with our commitment to nurturing well-rounded students equipped with the tools needed to navigate life’s challenges. We believe that investing in the education and empowerment of our youth today will shape a brighter and safer community for tomorrow.”
The integration of the D.A.R.E. Program reinforces the school’s dedication to fostering a positive learning environment that extends beyond the classroom, according to Kearney Public Schools Director of Student Services and Safety, Dan Endorf. Endorf, who helped initiate the program, is excited to see how the pilot program at Emerson works in conjunction with the school day and hopes it has profound effects on the students.
Endorf expressed that the D.A.R.E. launch at Emerson Elementary is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the schools, local law enforcement, and the community as a whole.
“By working together with KPD and our community, we are committed to creating a safe and supportive environment that empowers our students to make positive choices and thrive,” said Endorf.
