The D.A.R.E. PLUS Environmental Science After School Program teaches youth about etymology, conservation, and pollinators. The classes are taught Monday-Friday by Mr. Nathan Hawthorne and Mr. Jim Sherman who have over 30 years gardening experience. Currently the gardens have green glazed and Alabama blue collard greens, milkweed, radishes, carrots, lettuce, arugula, tokyo bekana cabbage, blood flower and ornamental flowers. Our goal is to teach the youth about growing their own food which is important in food desserts, like many of the communities these schools are in. Excess produce will be sold at the school’s farmer’s market. The funds raised will be used to support the long term success of the program.

The Gents and Mademoiselles organizations are based upon the principles of good citizenship, high moral standards and high academic achievement. At Booker T Washington the young men and women receive mentoring are focused on role modeling and community service to help them be leaders in their community.
