Pineywoods Community Academy students wore their D.A.R.E. shirts to school Thursday as the school marked the 41st anniversary of the creation of the program.
Started in 1983, the “Drug Abuse Resistance Education” program, or D.A.R.E., was set up in Los Angeles as a strategy to teach children to reject drug use and violent gang culture. It functions as a series of police officer-led lessons teaching children from kindergarten through 12th grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug-free lives.
“The lessons have changed a lot from the ’90s,” said PCA Officer Nichole Boots. “There were scare tactics. We don’t do that anymore. Foundations for kids resisting peer pressure start with their own self-confidence and self-esteem, and we focus a lot on that.”
